Space Transportation System-41 B 1984

STS-41-B launched on February 3, 1984 and landed on February 11, 1984, after deploying two communications satellites.

These are hard to find original STS-41B mission photograph contact sheet shots of Astronaut Bruce McCandless during his famous STS-41B EVA (extravehicular activity). The famous NASA photograph shows McCandless floating alone above Earth, hundreds of feet from Challenger. The image became a symbol of human exploration, often described as the "ultimate solitude.

In this rare vintage photograph, you can see just how symmetrical it really is: the dorsal and anal fins sit perfectly opposite each other, each with 15 rays, mirror images in motion. They're connected by a soft, wavy fin fringe that almost seems to ripple like fabric in water. The reason for this lies in its oval, rounded, disc-like flattened shape.

Posing for a sculpture by Rodin in 1865 could take hours, days, or even weeks. Models were expensive, and some poses—such as that of this Fallen Angel—were so complex that they sometimes hindered the artistic process more than they helped. It is therefore not surprising that Rodin soon began to recognize the power of photography.

Between 1966 and 1968, NASA’s Surveyor program sent a fleet of unmanned spacecraft to the Moon.
These mechanical scouts transmitted thousands of images back to Earth, including an extraordinary trove of television footage that proved vital in planning the manned Apollo landings.

Each one was a one-way mission: to land softly on the Moon, capture detailed images and scientific data, and transmit that information back to Earth. Once their mission was complete, they remained right where they had landed—silent sentinels on the lunar surface.

In 1969 Astronauts of the Apollo 12 landed their Lunar Module just a few hundred meters from Surveyor
3. The astronauts paid the aging probe a visit, took photographs, and even removed several
components to bring back to Earth. These pieces were later studied to understand how two and a half years
on the Moon had affected the spacecraft’s materials, particularly in the harsh conditions of space.

The collaborative lunar photography project by Adolf Voigt and Hans Giebler was instrumental in astronomical observation during the height of the space race. Using the 12-inch Bamberg-Refractor telescope at the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory, they captured detailed images of the moon’s surface with a custom-built camera, meticulously documenting its various phases.

Conducted shortly before the Apollo 11 moon landing, their work not only provided valuable visual records but also heightened public interest in lunar exploration during this pivotal era in space history.

7 mei 1945, twee dagen na de capitulatiebespreking in Wageningen, werd de bevrijding gevierd op de Dam in Amsterdam toen rond drie uur 's middags plotseling schoten werden gelost door Duitse militairen vanaf het balkon van De Groote Club, op de hoek met de Kalverstraat. Hierbij vielen minstens 32 doden.

De foto's die in 1944-1945 in het geheim werden gemaakt met de 'ondergedoken camera’ zijn officieel opgenomen in het UNESCO Memory of the World Register. Een indrukwekkende erkenning voor beelden die niet alleen fotografisch uitzonderlijk zijn, maar ook een krachtig document vormen van verzet, veerkracht en menselijkheid in oorlogstijd.
Bij DOF hebben we de eer om originele afdrukken van Ad Windig aan te bieden – afdrukken die hij zélf nog in de donkere kamer heeft gemaakt. Windig was één van de fotografen die destijds onder enorme risico’s deze beelden wist vast te leggen.

Today, the exhibition "One Club, One City, Ajax Amsterdam" opens in the hall of the City Archives in Amsterdam. Created by the City Archives and SV Ajax to celebrate Ajax’s 125th anniversary, the exhibition showcases 125 years of Ajax and Amsterdam through photos, archival footage, and video portraits.

Op 12 april opent Dof een nieuwe tentoonstelling met onder andere een serie zeldzame foto’s van een piepjonge Johan Cruijff, gefotografeerd tussen 1965 en 1967. Ruim zestig jaar geleden, op 15 november 1964, debuteerde de legendarische nummer veertien (met een goal) voor Ajax. Hoewel Michels het nog niet de tijd vond om Cruijff een vaste plaats in het elftal
te geven, kreeg hij op 24 oktober 1965 tegen DWS toch een basisplaats. Met Cruijff in de spits bleef Ajax vervolgens zestien wedstrijden op rij ongeslagen. #ajaxfc #cruijff #amsterdam

Done! Just in time for Christmas��😅. These beautiful frames were made by Joris. A glass slide of a study for a shark from 1900 was given a hardwood lightbox, and 4 microphotographs from Braunschweig were mounted in an elevated plexiglass frame.

The portfolio from which this image came was titled “NUS” (“Naked”) and was credited in the title to Laryew, an anagram used in an effort to separate Stanislas Walery’s erotic work with his more formal photography, as well as the work of his father. NUS included 100 heliogravures of nude women in various poses ranging from classical to modernist; some featured stark, angular lighting and architectural details, lending them a machine-age, Art Deco style. It is thought that these women are dancers from the popular Folies Bergere, a subject he frequently revisited.NUS considered among the best examples of experimental Art Deco photography.

before beginning training for his comeback match against Floyd Johnson. Stamped “Apr 25 1923” on verso.
Known as the Pottawatomie Giant, Jess Willard became an international sensation when on April 5, 1915, he knocked out heavyweight champion Jack Johnson in the 26th round before a huge crowd in Havana, Cuba. Willard defended his title the following year in a bout against Frank Moran on March 25, 1916 at Madison Square Garden. The end came on July 4, 1919, in a fight against Jack Dempsey in Toledo, Ohio. It is said during this bout that Willard lost several teeth and suffered a broken jaw and three broken ribs. Dempsey won the title in the fourth round, though Willard’s refusal to give up even after the beating he’d suffered is today considered to be one of the most impressive displays of perseverance in
boxing history."
